About this deal

This said, even wide-open at f/2.8 it's ultrasharp everywhere at every focal length. Just look at my Sample Images. BRAVO!

I see four stops of real-world improvement, and not quite as good as on the EOS RP with no in-body stabilization. Weight wise, too, the RF optics comes in at just 1,070g compared to the 1,480g heft of the EF. And trust us, when you're lugging this thing around for a day, that weight makes a lot of difference –especially when you take into consideration the reduced weight of the EOS R cameras compared to Canon's DSLRs.

The Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM showcases (almost) everything that's best about the RF system

This is an ideal lens for daytime sports because you don't need IS (Image Stabilization) or the f/2.8 speed of Canon's other 70-200mm lenses, and this one retains the super-fast focusing and excellent image quality you do need. Canon should have it set this way by default, but they don't. No big deal now that I figured it out. The factor 0.393701 is the result from the division 1 / 2.54 (inch definition). Therefore, another way would be: ED: Magic Extra-low Dispersion glass for reduced secondary chromatic aberration (sharper pictures).

I tested the E-mount version of the 70-200mm with the Sony a7R IV and a7R V. The a7R IV is a camera I own, whereas Lensrentals provided the a7R V so I could more easily conduct side-by-side tests with the Tamron 70-180mm G2. The Sigma balances well on both bodies, but I still found the extra support of a baseplate helpful. Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (on Canon EOS R5) at 1/200 sec, f/2.8, ISO160 (Image credit: James Artaius / Digital Camera World) These are just snapshots and there are many more throughout the review; my real work is in my Gallery. The foot has two ¼″ × 20 tripod threads so you can position it for great balance with either light or heavy cameras. It's a bargain today because it's been in Canon's catalog since 1995, not because it's any less well made than Canon's newest Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Optically, this lens is about the same as the 70-200mm f/4L IS, which is excellent, but not as over-the-top perfect as the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. In each performance aspect, this non-IS lens is almost, but not quite as good as the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Most people would never notice, so if money matters, get this original non-IS lens. If you need the best regardless of cost, pay twice as much for the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, which also gets you slightly faster autofocus and Image Stabilization. Personally, I shoot without a tripod in the field, having to carry this all day and night, so I own the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS. This new "E" diaphragm will not work on the D1 or D2 series, D100, D200, D90, D80, D70 series, D60, D50, D40 series, or D3000, and will not work on any 35mm camera.
