About this deal

For parking we found it easiest to park up on Braybrooke road and walk down to the chalk pit from there. Go down Water Lane and along a bridleway past Home Farm. Turn right onto the Darent Valley Path and follow it to Otford's High Street.

Do not cross the river on the road bridge but keep ahead on Darenth Way, passing the War Memorial ? on the riverbank. Pass to the left of Water House ? and follow the tree-lined riverside path. Griffiths has created a bunch of characters I really like though, in a setting I love, and so will I continue with the series? That is a definite. The mysteries, for me, are always secondary to the character development, because I like or love all of the recurring characters. A new character is introduced to the police department in this volume. At first, I didn't really like the person, but as the story continued, I found myself curious to learn more. I should've trusted this author to create even an unlikable character worth following and changing my opinion toward. The path eventually levels out and you go through a wooden kissing gate. Go across a potentially muddy stretch into a field and fork left onto a faint grassy path (leaving the NDW and the Walk 1–43 route, which both continue up the right-hand field edge). Follow this path as it curves around the left-hand side of the field, passing by a trig point. In the far corner go out through a gap in the trees and turn left onto a minor road (Rowdow Lane).Alternatively, simply follow the riverside path directly to Mill Lane and go up this lane to the High Street.

Meanwhile, DS Judy Johnson is investigating the disappearance of a local rough sleeper. The only trace of her is the rumour that she's gone 'underground'. This might be a figure of speech, but with the discovery of the bones and the rumours both Ruth and the police have heard of a vast network of old chalk-mining tunnels under King's Lynn, home to a vast community of rough sleepers, the clues point in only one direction. Local academic Martin Kellerman knows all about the tunnels and their history - but can his assertions of cannibalism and ritual killing possibly be true? They go inside. Clough and Tom Henry are chatting at the front desk. Judy hears the word 'penalties'. I know of no better example where this subject has been treated with compassion and understanding while being fundamental to the storyline.Dr. Ruth Galloway help is once again requested by the local police when several bones are found in the underground chalk mine tunnels under the city of Norwich. The bones have been boiled showing strong hints toward cannibalism. Meanwhile a local man, Eddie O’Toole asks DCI Nelson to investigate the disappearance of Barbara Murray who hasn’t been seen for a while. Both Eddie and Barbara are rough sleepers and Nelson gives more credence to Eddie’s request when Eddie’s body is found stabbed to death. There are rumours and suspicions that an underground group could be responsible for the deaths in the old chalk mine tunnels.

Cliffhanger alert! Before you read this book, make sure you have the next book in the series waiting! My mouth dropped open at the end of this book and I barely want to take the time to write a review before delving into the next book, The Dark Angel. He was also terrified his children would end up in state care and become prostitutes. When one of his girls said innocently that she would very much like to go to heaven, Williams became convinced this was the only course left open to him. It is the characters. I feel that I have grown to know them through the books. I want to catch up with their lives and see what it happening. I like every one of the repeating characters. Ruth is a special protagonist. She is intelligent and does the best she can raising her daughter Kate as a single parent. As readers, we are watching Kate grow up. It made me smile when she wanted to show off her petticoats. She is a bright lively child who is loved so much by Kate and Harry Nelson.Continue past the bridge on a footpath, which in 75m swings left and goes downhill through the trees. In 100m go through a wooden kissing gate onto the top of a steeply-sloping patch of grassland, Polhill Bank ?, where you can finally pause to admire a fine view across the Darent valley. Magpie Bottom and Polhill Bank are Local Nature Reserves managed by the Kent Wildlife Trust. These areas of chalk grassland support many varieties of orchid.

St Bartholomew, Otford dates from the 11 thC; construction began in 1060 with the tower being added in around 1185. It contains a large marble memorial to Charles and David Polhill, descendants of Oliver Cromwell. The Kings Arms still has its ostler box, a shelter at the front of the pub for the person who used to attend to horses at coaching inns. Wonderfully rich . . . A great series.” — Guardian | “Smart, down-to-earth, and completely believable.” — Mercury News The audio performance was, once again, great. She changes voices and intonations convincingly, and the narration never gets in the way of the story. Five stars to the audiobook version.Ruth Galloway is a remarkable, delightful character...A must-read for fans of crime and mystery fiction." -- Associated Press The first speaker decides that they’d rather not know if anything strange happened on this land in these lines of ‘ The Chalk Pit’ . They’d rather “make a tale” and use that to fill in any blanks in their head. Or, alternatively, they add, leave it like “the end of a play”. Using this simile, he compares the chalk-pit to an empty stage, devoid of actors and props, but still alluding to action of some kind. Continuing on, the speaker makes suggestions of life that might’ve recently been there and that they didn’t see. His example is of a “ghost” that has “left…as we two came” or a “woodman with the axe”.
