My only one problem with the book, hence the loss of one star, was the inaccuracies of other characters reacting to a MM relationship. There would be no need to bundle together when sleeping indoors, dry and sheltered from the biting winter winds. Denny's ability to transport readers to a different time while delving into universal emotions makes this novel a standout in the genre. The plot is really addictive - even though you *think* you know what might happen, there are so many twists and turns that'll leave your heart in mouth. Penn, by contrast, is so adrift at the beginning that to see how far he had come in the epilogue all but brought a tear to my eye.

It follows the story of Penn and Raff— two men running away from their situations who find each other in the Hartswood.Raff is from the traveling party ready to give away his sister in marriage (eagerly) but then the groom suddenly runs away.

Considering the views of the time, their love story would not have been one easily accepted by those around them, and so I would have liked to have seen this developed more. Their personalities were different and yet so similar as they hesitated to make the first moves in admitting their feelings and once they had they didn't hesitate to gravitate towards the other with all the affection they could openly display.
